ProCo FAT RAT Distortion Pedal
The ProCo FAT RAT: A Distortion Pedal That Punches Above Its Weight The ProCo FAT RAT is a modern twist on a classic, a distortion pedal that packs a serious punch while retaining the character that made the original RAT a staple in so many guitarists' rigs. Under the hood, this pedal offers a unique clipping section that lets you toggle between the classic silicon diode clipping of the original RAT and a new mosfet/germanium clipping mode. The mosfet clipping adds a subtle scooping and smoothing effect to the upper mids, giving the FAT RAT a more amp-like and natural distortion tone. But the real magic comes from the large, precision CTS potentiometers that give you incredibly smooth control over the Distortion, Filter, and Volume parameters. This lets you dial in a wide range of tones, from smooth, singing overdrive to thick, aggressive distortion. The "Fat" switch also provides a substantial bass boost and high-end cut, making the FAT RAT a versatile tool for both guitar and bass. What really sets the FAT RAT apart, though, is its ability to operate at 18V, unlocking increased headroom and fidelity compared to the original. This allows the pedal to remain responsive and dynamic, even when dimed. It's no wonder the RAT has been a favorite of alt-rock icons like Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis over the years - the FAT RAT delivers classic tone with modern refinements.
